How to make it

Safety

Clamp the wood before sawing, and tap away from your hands with the screwdriver.

  1. Step 1: Mark the slot
    1

    Mark the slot

Draw a line 1 1/2 in from 1 end across the top. Draw another 1/2 in away.

  2. Step 2: Angle the lines
    2

    Angle the lines

Tilt both lines about 15 degrees back with the speed square. Phones lean better that way.

  3. Step 3: Clamp it
    3

    Clamp it

Clamp the block so the marked area sticks out past the bench.

  4. Step 4: Saw the 2 cuts
    4

    Saw the 2 cuts

Saw down each line 3/4 in deep. Stop at the same depth on both.

  5. Step 5: Knock out the middle
    5

    Knock out the middle

Knock out the waste with a flat screwdriver and hammer. Clean it up with sandpaper wrapped on a ruler.

  6. Step 6: Sand and oil
    6

    Sand and oil

Sand every edge round. Rub on oil and add felt pads.

Edie's tip

Test the slot with your phone in its case before sanding. You might need it wider.
