How to make it

Safety

Never leave the oven while pinecones bake since sap can smoke, and keep scented cones away from cats and dogs.

  1. Step 1: Gather the cones
    1

    Gather the cones

Pick dry, open cones off the ground. Skip any that are moldy or crushed.

  2. Step 2: Brush them off
    2

    Brush them off

Knock out dirt and needles with a soft brush.

  3. Step 3: Bake them clean
    3

    Bake them clean

Spread them on a foil-lined sheet and bake at 200 F for 30 to 60 minutes. This kills bugs and opens the scales. Stay in the kitchen the whole time.

  4. Step 4: Cool them
    4

    Cool them

Let them cool fully on the sheet.

  5. Step 5: Add the scent
    5

    Add the scent

Put on gloves. Drop the cones in the bag with 20 to 30 drops of fragrance oil and shake.

  6. Step 6: Seal and wait

    Seal and wait

Seal the bag and leave it for 2 weeks, shaking now and then. Pour them into a bowl and breathe in.

Edie's tip

Refresh them next year with a few more drops in the bag. They come back like new.
