How to make it

Safety

Wear eye and hearing protection while cutting, and play on grass with feet clear, since a falling tower of 2x4s hurts.

  1. Step 1: Pick straight boards
    1

    Pick straight boards

Sight down each 2x4 at the store. Twisted boards make wobbly towers.

  2. Step 2: Set a stop block
    2

    Set a stop block

Clamp a stop block 10 1/2 in from the blade. That's exactly 3 block widths.

  3. Step 3: Cut 54 blocks
    3

    Cut 54 blocks

Square one end of each board, then cut 9 blocks from each. Keep cutting until you have 54.

  4. Step 4: Sand every block

    Sand every block

Sand all faces with 80, then 120 grit. Splinter-free blocks slide better and feel better.

  5. Step 5: Round the edges
    5

    Round the edges

Ease every edge with the router or by hand. It prevents chipping when the tower falls.

  6. Step 6: Color the ends
    6

    Color the ends

Paint or stain the ends of a few blocks if you want house rules, like red means sing a song.

  7. Step 7: Stack and play
    7

    Stack and play

Stack 18 layers of 3, alternating direction. Pull one block, place it on top, and repeat until someone loses.

Edie's tip

Leave the blocks raw or use a wipe-on finish. Glossy paint makes them sticky and the game less fun.
