How to make it

Safety

Wear safety glasses and hearing protection while cutting, and clamp small parts instead of holding them by hand.

  1. Step 1: Cut the parts
    1

    Cut the parts

From the 1x6, cut a base at 10 1/2 in and 2 ends at 10 in. From the 1x3, cut 2 sides at 12 in. Cut the dowel at 12 in.

  2. Step 2: Shape the ends
    2

    Shape the ends

Stack the 2 ends and round the top corners by tracing a can. Cut and sand them together so they match.

  3. Step 3: Drill the handle holes
    3

    Drill the handle holes

Drill a 3/4 in hole through both stacked ends, centered and 1 1/2 in from the top. Back it with scrap.

  4. Step 4: Attach the ends
    4

    Attach the ends

Glue and nail each end onto an end of the base, bottoms flush.

  5. Step 5: Add the handle
    5

    Add the handle

Slide the dowel through both holes until it's flush on each side. Pin it with a brad from the edge.

  6. Step 6: Attach the sides

    Attach the sides

Glue and nail the 1x3 sides to the base and ends. Now it's a solid box.

  7. Step 7: Finish it
    7

    Finish it

Sand everything, wipe on Danish oil and screw the bottle opener to one end. Load it up and carry it out.

Edie's tip

Glue 2 thin strips of wood across the inside as dividers. Bottles stop clinking together on the walk.
