How to make it

Safety

Melt wax only in a water bath, never leave it alone on the heat, and smother any wax fire with a lid, never water.

  1. Step 1: Melt the wax
    1

    Melt the wax

Set the dipping can in a pot of simmering water and fill it with beeswax. Heat it to 155 to 165 F.

  2. Step 2: Cut and weight the wick
    2

    Cut and weight the wick

Cut a 30 in wick and drape it over the dowel so 2 equal ends hang down. Tie a washer to each end.

  3. Step 3: Prime the wick
    3

    Prime the wick

Dip both ends into the wax for 3 seconds and lift out. Pull them straight as they cool.

  4. Step 4: Dip and wait
    4

    Dip and wait

Dip for 2 to 3 seconds, lift out and wait 1 minute. Keep the 2 candles from touching.

  5. Step 5: Build the layers
    5

    Build the layers

Repeat 25 to 30 times. Each dip adds a thin layer. It goes slow, then suddenly they look like candles.

  6. Step 6: Cut off the weights
    6

    Cut off the weights

Once the bases are 7/8 in across, slice off the weighted tips with a warm knife.

  7. Step 7: Hang to harden
    7

    Hang to harden

Hang them overnight. Trim the wicks to 1/4 in and slide them into holders.

Edie's tip

If the wax gets too hot, dips melt off the last layer. Lower the heat and let it cool a few degrees.
