How to make it

Safety

Melt wax only in a double boiler, never leave it on the heat alone, and smother a wax fire with a lid, never water.

  1. Step 1: Stick the wicks
    1

    Stick the wicks

Press a wick sticker onto each wick tab. Push it into the center of the jar bottom.

  2. Step 2: Melt the wax
    2

    Melt the wax

Weigh out 1 lb of wax and melt it in the double boiler. Heat it to 185 F. Never set the pitcher on a bare burner.

  3. Step 3: Add the scent
    3

    Add the scent

Take the wax off the heat at 185 F and pour in the fragrance oil. Stir slowly for 2 full minutes so it binds.

  4. Step 4: Cool, then pour
    4

    Cool, then pour

Let the wax cool to about 135 F. Pour it slowly into each jar, leaving 1/2 in of space at the top.

  5. Step 5: Center the wicks
    5

    Center the wicks

Clip a clothespin across the rim to hold each wick straight up. Leave them alone for 24 hours away from drafts.

  6. Step 6: Trim and cure
    6

    Trim and cure

Trim each wick to 1/4 in. Let the candles sit 1 to 2 weeks so the scent gets stronger.

  7. Step 7: Do a long first burn
    7

    Do a long first burn

Burn it the first time until the melted wax reaches the jar edge, about 1 hour per inch of jar width. This stops tunneling for the life of the candle.

Edie's tip

Pour at a cooler temperature if you see a lumpy top. A hair dryer on low smooths it out in 30 seconds.
