How to make it

Safety

Wear gloves and keep your hands away from your eyes, since citric acid stings, and use only fragrance and colorant labeled skin safe.

  1. Step 1: Mix the dry ingredients

Whisk the baking soda, citric acid, cornstarch and Epsom salt in a large bowl. Break up any lumps.

  2. Step 2: Mix the wet ingredients

    Mix the wet ingredients

Stir the melted oil, fragrance and colorant together in a small bowl.

  3. Step 3: Combine slowly
    3

    Combine slowly

Drizzle the wet mix into the dry a little at a time, whisking fast. Go slow or it starts fizzing.

  4. Step 4: Check the texture

    Check the texture

Squeeze a handful. It should hold together like damp sand. If it crumbles, spritz once or twice with witch hazel and mix.

  5. Step 5: Pack the molds

Overfill both halves of the mold and press them together hard. Wipe off the extra around the seam.

  6. Step 6: Unmold gently

    Unmold gently

Wait 1 minute, then tap and lift one half off. Ease the bomb onto the tray.

  7. Step 7: Let them dry

    Let them dry

Leave them 24 hours in a dry room. Then wrap them airtight so humidity doesn't set them off.

Edie's tip

Make these on a dry day. Humid air makes them puff, crack and fizz on the tray.
