How to make it

  1. Step 1: Cut the pieces
    1

    Cut the pieces

Cut 2 outer and 2 lining pieces, each 15 x 17 in. Cut 2 straps of webbing at 24 in.

  2. Step 2: Sew the outer bag
    2

    Sew the outer bag

Pin the outer pieces right sides together. Sew the sides and bottom with a 1/2 in seam.

  3. Step 3: Box the corners
    3

    Box the corners

Pinch each bottom corner so the side seam lines up with the bottom seam. Sew straight across 2 in from the tip and trim.

  4. Step 4: Sew the lining
    4

    Sew the lining

Repeat with the lining, but leave a 5 in gap in the bottom seam for turning.

  5. Step 5: Baste the straps
    5

    Baste the straps

Pin each strap's ends to the outer bag's top edge, 4 in in from each side seam, loops hanging down. Stitch them in place.

  6. Step 6: Join bag and lining
    6

    Join bag and lining

Slide the outer bag, right side out, into the lining, which stays inside out. Line up the top edges and sew all the way around.

  7. Step 7: Turn it
    7

    Turn it

Pull everything out through the gap in the lining. Sew the gap closed and push the lining inside.

  8. Step 8: Topstitch the top
    8

    Topstitch the top

Press the top edge flat and stitch around it 1/4 in from the edge. Now it looks store-bought.

Edie's tip

Prewash the canvas and lining before cutting. Canvas shrinks, and a puckered lining after the first wash is no fun.
