How to make it

Safety

Cut along a metal ruler with the blade moving away from your hand, and use contact cement with a window open.

  1. Step 1: Cut 2 panels
    1

    Cut 2 panels

Cut 2 pieces at 4 1/4 x 3 in. Trace a 1 in circle centered on one long edge of the front panel and cut it out as a thumb notch.

  2. Step 2: Glue the edges
    2

    Glue the edges

Brush a thin strip of contact cement 1/4 in wide along the sides and bottom of both panels. Wait until tacky and press together.

  3. Step 3: Mark the stitch line
    3

    Mark the stitch line

Set the wing divider to 1/8 in and scribe a line along the glued sides and bottom.

  4. Step 4: Punch the holes

    Punch the holes

Line up the chisel on the scribed line and strike it with the mallet. Walk it along, putting one tooth back in the last hole each time.

  5. Step 5: Saddle stitch

Thread a needle on each end of the thread. Push both needles through each hole from opposite sides, pulling snug.

  6. Step 6: Lock the end

    Lock the end

Backstitch 2 holes, trim the thread close and melt the ends with a lighter.

  7. Step 7: Finish the edges

    Finish the edges

Sand the edges flush, bevel the corners and rub with a slicker until they shine. Slide in your cards.

Edie's tip

Pull every stitch with the same tension. Even stitches are what make handmade leather look pro.
