How to make it

Safety

Clamp the block while sawing and chiseling, and always push the chisel away from your hand.

  1. Step 1: Mark the slot
    1

    Mark the slot

Lay the block on its wide face. Draw 2 lines across it 1/2 in apart, 1 1/2 in from one end, both leaning back 15 degrees.

  2. Step 2: Saw the sides
    2

    Saw the sides

Clamp the block. Saw down both lines to 3/4 in deep, keeping the saw on the waste side.

  3. Step 3: Clear the slot
    3

    Clear the slot

Tap the chisel into the wood between the cuts and pop the waste out in small bites. Keep both hands behind the edge.

  4. Step 4: Test the fit
    4

    Test the fit

Slide your phone in its case into the slot. Widen it a little if it's tight.

  5. Step 5: Sand and round
    5

    Sand and round

Sand all edges round with 80, then smooth with 120 grit.

  6. Step 6: Finish it
    6

    Finish it

Rub on oil or wax and stick felt pads underneath. Prop up your phone and start that call.

Edie's tip

Hardwood scraps like walnut or oak make a stand that looks store-bought and won't tip.
