How to make it

  1. Step 1: Make the template
    1

    Make the template

Draw a rectangle 3 x 7 in with one short end rounded. Draw 2 lines from the straight end, 1 in apart, stopping 3 in from the round end.

  2. Step 2: Cut 2 pieces

    Cut 2 pieces

Fold each color of paper in half. Place the template's straight end on the fold, trace it and cut through both layers. Cut the 2 slits.

  3. Step 3: Start weaving

    Start weaving

Hold the pieces at a right angle. Slip the first strip of one color through the first loop of the other, then around the next.

  4. Step 4: Keep alternating

    Keep alternating

Each strip goes through a loop, then a loop goes through it. Ease the paper so it doesn't tear.

  5. Step 5: Finish the rows

    Finish the rows

Work through all 3 strips, sliding woven rows up as you go. You'll see a checkerboard heart appear.

  6. Step 6: Add a handle

    Add a handle

Glue a thin paper strip inside both sides of the top. Hang it or fill it with candy.

Edie's tip

Glossy wrapping paper glued back to back makes the sturdiest, shiniest hearts.
