How to make it

Safety

Googly eyes are a choking hazard, so keep them away from babies and toddlers in the house.

  1. Step 1: Pick a pine cone
    1

    Pick a pine cone

Choose one that stands up on its own. Shake it over the grass to knock out bugs and dirt.

  2. Step 2: Cut the wings
    2

    Cut the wings

Draw 2 teardrop shapes on the felt. Let your child cut them out with child-safe scissors.

  3. Step 3: Make the eyes
    3

    Make the eyes

Cut 2 circles of white paper about the size of a quarter. Glue a googly eye in the middle of each.

  4. Step 4: Glue on the face
    4

    Glue on the face

Squeeze a dot of tacky glue on the top scales and press the eyes in place. Hold for a slow count of 10.

  5. Step 5: Add wings and beak

    Add wings and beak

Tuck a wing into the scales on each side. Glue a tiny yellow paper triangle under the eyes.

  6. Step 6: Let it dry

    Let it dry

Stand the owl up for 1 hour so the glue sets.

Edie's tip

Bake-free trick for clean cones: soak them in warm water for 20 minutes, then dry for a day. They close up wet and open again as they dry.
