How to make it

Safety

Salt dough can make pets and small children sick if eaten. Keep raw and finished pieces out of reach.

  1. Step 1: Mix the dough
    1

    Mix the dough

Stir the flour and salt together. Add water a little at a time until it feels like play dough.

  2. Step 2: Knead it
    2

    Knead it

Knead 5 minutes on a floured table until smooth. Grandkids are good at this.

  3. Step 3: Roll a thick slab
    3

    Roll a thick slab

Roll it about a half inch thick. Thinner dough cracks.

  4. Step 4: Press the hands
    4

    Press the hands

Press the child's hand in firmly, then your own fingertips or thumbprint beside it.

  5. Step 5: Cut around it
    5

    Cut around it

Cut a circle or heart around the prints with a butter knife. Poke a hole at the top with a straw.

  6. Step 6: Grown-up step: bake
    6

    Grown-up step: bake

Bake at 250 F for about 3 hours until hard all the way through. Turn it over halfway.

  7. Step 7: Paint and seal
    7

    Paint and seal

Paint names and the year. Seal both sides once the paint is dry.

Edie's tip

Scratch the date into the back with a toothpick before baking. You'll be glad of it in 10 years.
