How to make it

Safety

Hot wax burns, so work seated at a table with the cup on a tray, and never leave a lit candle alone.

  1. Step 1: Stick the wick
    1

    Stick the wick

Put a wick sticker on the metal tab. Press it to the center of the cup bottom.

  2. Step 2: Hold the wick straight
    2

    Hold the wick straight

Pinch the top of the wick between 2 clothespins laid across the cup rim.

  3. Step 3: Melt the wax
    3

    Melt the wax

Microwave the wax flakes in the jug in 1 minute bursts, stirring between, until clear.

  4. Step 4: Let it cool a bit
    4

    Let it cool a bit

Wait until it reads about 135 F. Cooler wax sets smoother on top.

  5. Step 5: Pour slowly
    5

    Pour slowly

Wearing oven mitts, pour the wax into the cup, stopping half an inch below the rim.

  6. Step 6: Leave it alone
    6

    Leave it alone

Let it set 24 hours without moving it. Trim the wick to a quarter inch.

Edie's tip

A glass jug with a handle and spout is far easier to pour with sore wrists than a pot. Fill it only halfway so it's light.
