How to make it

Safety

Use untreated wood, skip a perch since it helps predators, and clamp everything before sawing.

  1. Step 1: Mark the pieces
    1

    Mark the pieces

Measure and mark the front, back, 2 sides, floor and 2 roof pieces from your plan.

  2. Step 2: Cut the pieces
    2

    Cut the pieces

Clamp the board and saw each piece. Label them in pencil.

  3. Step 3: Drill the entrance
    3

    Drill the entrance

Grown-up step: drill a 1 1/4 in hole in the front, about 6 in up from the floor.

  4. Step 4: Build the box
    4

    Build the box

Glue and nail the sides to the floor, then add the front and back.

  5. Step 5: Add drainage
    5

    Add drainage

Snip 1/4 in off each floor corner so rain drains out.

  6. Step 6: Nail on the roof
    6

    Nail on the roof

Overlap the 2 roof pieces at the peak. Glue and nail them down.

  7. Step 7: Hang it
    7

    Hang it

Mount it 5 to 10 ft up on a post or tree, facing away from wind.

Edie's tip

Leave it unpainted inside. Birds don't like paint fumes or slick walls.
