How to make it

Safety

Wear gloves since sap is sticky and irritates some skin, and keep holly berries away from pets and kids.

  1. Step 1: Get the greens
    1

    Get the greens

Ask a tree lot for their trimmings. Many give them away for free.

  2. Step 2: Cut the stems
    2

    Cut the stems

Cut pieces 6 to 8 in long. Sort them by type.

  3. Step 3: Make bundles
    3

    Make bundles

Stack 3 to 5 stems into a fan, mixing types. Make about 20 bundles.

  4. Step 4: Wire the first bundle

    Wire the first bundle

Tie the paddle wire to the frame. Lay a bundle on it and wrap the wire tightly around the stems 3 times.

  5. Step 5: Overlap and repeat

    Overlap and repeat

Lay the next bundle over the stems of the first, covering them. Wrap and keep going without cutting the wire.

  6. Step 6: Close the circle

    Close the circle

Lift the first bundle and tuck the last stems under it. Wire it down and tie off on the back.

  7. Step 7: Decorate

    Decorate

Wire on pinecones and a bow. Hang it and smell that forest.

Edie's tip

Mist it every few days if it hangs indoors. Outside in the cold, a fresh wreath often looks good for 4 weeks or more.
