How to make it

Safety

Bake at the package temperature, since scorched clay gives off irritating fumes, and keep clay tools separate from food tools.

  1. Step 1: Condition the clay
    1

    Condition the clay

Knead each block in your hands until it bends without cracking. Warm clay is easier to work.

  2. Step 2: Roll even slabs
    2

    Roll even slabs

Roll the clay to about 1/8 in thick. Even thickness bakes evenly and looks pro.

  3. Step 3: Add a pattern
    3

    Add a pattern

Press tiny chips of other colors into the slab and roll again for terrazzo. Or twist 2 colors for marble.

  4. Step 4: Cut the shapes
    4

    Cut the shapes

Press cutters straight down and lift. Lay the pieces on parchment on your tile.

  5. Step 5: Poke the holes
    5

    Poke the holes

Push the needle tool through each piece where the jump ring will go, 1/8 in from the edge.

  6. Step 6: Bake them
    6

    Bake them

Bake at the temperature on your clay package, often 275 F, for 30 minutes per 1/4 in of thickness. Check the real temp with an oven thermometer.

  7. Step 7: Sand the edges
    7

    Sand the edges

Once cool, wet-sand any rough edges with 400 then 600 grit.

  8. Step 8: Assemble
    8

    Assemble

Twist each jump ring open sideways with 2 pliers, hook on the clay and the earring hook, then twist it closed.

Edie's tip

Wipe your hands with a baby wipe between colors. Light clays pick up every speck of lint and dark clay.
